Funk The Future

By Amauri

The favelas of Rio - the shantytowns built in the hills - have birthed much of Brazillian music. In the 21st century, the sound of the favelas is baile funk. Named after the bailes - the huge partys that house the music - baile funk is the ultimate expression of Brazil's mashup history. Featuring riffs and samples from North American pop as the background to young Carioca hip-hop, baile funk is a parralel music industry complete with record labels, promoters, international DJs and thousands upon thousands of fans.

It is in the Favela that the film draws to a close - among a creative model that is entirely 21st century - conected, peer to peer, vibrant, and beyond the growing pains the West is feeling in the digital age.

Hola

Hola,
In México there is a huge mash-up and remixing scene from Cumbia and popular culture right know.
It all started problaby with Nortec's Tijuana Sessions where the "banda" sound from the north of Mexico were incorporated into electronic music. Right know, there are project remixing cumbia, chacha (Instituto Mexicano del Sonido) or just asimililating the whole thing and re-interpretating in a more futuristic and odd way like SIlverio.
You might be interested in include other movements of the same vein to the film?
Your project it's awsome :)
