Canadian Copyright

By brett

In the first months of 2007, Canadian papers were filled with ominous warnings from US content producers that unless canada shapes up its copyright policy, repercussions will be in order. Indeed, Canada is now the latest country placed on the US "priority watch list" for "piracy". Apparently, Canada is home to a huge and co-ordinated ring of pirates who steal movies from theatres by way of handicams.

Everything from with holding Hollywood movies from theatres to trade sanctions have been threatened. It seems Canada is in the same position that other "watch list" countries, from China to Russia to Brazil, have found themselves.

It is no coincidence that this pressure is occuring just as Canada is considering changes to its copyright laws. This Canadian pressure is a microcosm of what has been applied to the developing world.
