Lessig defended a friend, Eric Eldred, who made a living by producing CDs of material in the public domain. The SBCEA threatened his livelihood. For Lessig, it was also unconstituational - against the original framers of the US constitution, who wanted copyright for "limited term". Lessig and his supporters called SBCEA corporate welfare.
Lessig's friends warned him - "you can't go against all the money in the world and win". They were right - the Supreme Court ruled in Disney's favor - copright was extended for another 20 years.
