Birth of The Internet
The Internet was created as an open platform - open standards, the End to End principle, encouraged innovation by allowing innovators to determine how communication would occur. This philosophy very much discouraged control of the network - instead, it would be left alone so that the best standards could emerge. This philosophy would eventually collide with the record industry, which had a vertically integrated approach, from creation to distribution, which depended on the ability of a few people to discourage competition and set proprietary standards. When music started showing up on the 'net, a showdown was inevitable.
